Trump Says Putin Respects US Again
Trump’s remarks came in response to statements made by Putin during a recent visit to Belarus, where the Russian president referred to Trump as a “courageous man.”
During a conversation with journalists in the Oval Office, Trump remarked, “Vladimir Putin made some very nice statements today,” and emphasized that such commendations would have been unimaginable under former President Joe Biden.
Trump insisted that America’s global image had suffered before he returned to power.
“He respects our country again. He didn’t respect it a year ago, I can tell you that,” Trump asserted, also claiming that Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had renewed their regard for the United States under his leadership.
Criticizing the former administration, Trump said, “We had a president that was incompetent. We had bad people circulating around this desk – this beautiful, Resolute desk. They had, I guess, evil intentions,” alluding to what he considers a period of mismanagement and harm to U.S. interests.
Trump has often depicted his predecessor’s diplomatic approach as frail and detrimental to the nation’s prestige abroad. He maintains that major global crises, such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, would have been avoided if he had remained in charge.
Meanwhile, speaking to the press in Minsk, Putin affirmed his “deep respect” for Trump and commended him for overcoming significant obstacles, including surviving what he referred to as an assassination attempt the previous year.
Putin added that he views Trump as someone “sincerely seeking” to bring an end to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.
